Defending the Defenders

MDN initially began advocating for the protection of human rights defenders to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives in 2007. This was accompanied by several forms of support to human rights defenders. However the Defending the Defenders project is the first national project focusing on holistic security of HRDs and is supported by the British High Commission in Colombo .

Defending the Defenders aims to facilitate the empowerment of human rights defenders who come under violent and political target, by offering a program of physical and digital security as well as psycho-social support. This project will produce a research paper looking into an in-depth situation analysis of human rights defenders in Maldives, highlighting the need for their protection and security. This paper will be used to advocate with institutions as a means of assisting those who face retribution as a result of their work as human rights defenders.

A holistic security program for HRDs will be developed with the assistance and knowledge of experts in the areas of physical security and digital security, and a component on psycho-social support for at-risk human rights defenders and activists.
